West Brom transfer window target Ben Brereton Diaz set for Sheffield United move in latest attacking blow to Carlos Corberan

Carlos Corberan will need to look elsewhere for much-needed reinforcements for his West Brom attack as Ben Brereton Diaz is reportedly set to sign for Sheffield United.

The former Blackburn star was tipped as a Baggies target by TEAMtalk on 6 November as it emerged that he could be set for a return to England just one window after leaving for Villarreal.

West Brom were named along with Leicester, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Burnley as interested in the Chile international striker with his current employers ready to sanction a loan move.

But according to The Star on 2 January it is the Blades who are set to take advantage of his struggles in La Liga as he is now expected to sign for the Premier League side on loan for the rest of the campaign.

It may have been a long shot for the Albion when faced with top flight competition and promotion-chasing rivals, but it is still the latest set back for a club who have been forced to endure one blow after another to their attacking ranks.

With Matt Phillips and Josh Maja both ruled out for up to five months after the pair required surgery to address serious injury issues, and Daryl Dike still yet to feature this term after his long-term rehab the options in the squad were already depleted.

The recall of Jeremy Sarmiento to Brighton from his loan at The Hawthorns has compounded that problem, as the youngster has now joined Championship rivals Ipswich for the rest of the season [Sky Sports, 3 January].

After Brereton Diaz scored 36 goals in the second tier over the previous two campaigns it would have been a welcome boost of West Brom had been able to pick up the 24-year-old on loan, despite his failure to find the net in 14 largely substitute appearances in La Liga.

However it looks like that won’t be happening so Corberan will have to move on to other options as quickly as possible as he attempts to strengthen his attack.

In other West Brom news, a new contract for one “excellent” Baggies ace are currently hanging in the balance due to the unresolved takeover.
