Lewis Cox tips Carlos Corberan to make ‘surprise’ West Brom signing during January transfer window

Lewis Cox has admitted that it “wouldn’t be a surprise” to see West Brom bring a completely unknown loanee to The Hawthorns during the January transfer window.

The Baggies are reportedly eager to sign two new attacking options this month to replace Jeremy Sarmiento after he was recalled by Brighton and Matt Phillips after he picked up a serious injury during the Baggies’ defeat to Leicester.

While the expectation is that Carlos Corberan will be keen to sign proven Championship players, the Express & Star’s Cox believes that there could be one or two surprising arrivals from abroad this January.

West Brom

Speaking on the Express & Star’s Baggies Broadcast (4 January, 54:50) he said: “I think in an ideal world Albion want loans who have proven in their first one or two loans that they’ve got something. Ideally in the Championship but that’s going to be hard to come by.

“Carlos Corberan knows that overseas market, so it would not be a huge surprise if a winger of foreign origins comes in from a club abroad that you wouldn’t expect and we’ve never heard of him. That wouldn’t be a surprise because Corberan knows that market.

“Albion need them to hit the ground running.”

Risky business

West Brom cannot afford to gamble with too many players this January, especially as they have found themselves in the middle of a race for the playoff places. Corberan needs genuine Championship quality, but that’s hard to come by, especially on loan.

The Baggies boss has never been afraid to bring players in from abroad, that was the case with Pipa this summer and while his signing may not have gone as hoped, it doesn’t mean other new arrivals wouldn’t have the desired effect.

West Brom

Although the money at The Hawthorns remains limited, it seems as though it could still be an exciting transfer window for the Albion supporters as genuinely anyone could come through the door.

Hopefully, whoever does make the switch to West Brom over the next month will have the desired impact and will help Corberan’s side book their place in the playoffs for the second half of the campaign.
