West Brom not happy as loanee Mo Faal says he wants to leave, loan recall confirmed today

West Brom youngster Mo Faal has returned to The Hawthorns following his loan spell at Doncaster Rovers after he triggered his recall option in January, as shared by the Doncaster Rovers Twitter account.

It was confirmed on 13 January that Faal has returned to West Brom and his loan has come to an end after spending the first half of the season as a regular starter with the Yorkshire club.

Faal had made 25 league appearances for the League Two club since joining in the summer, with 20 of those coming from the start, scoring seven goals.

Doncaster boss Grant McCann shared further details on the call, saying: “On Thursday, we get a call from his agent, I speak to Mo on the Friday, I said ‘What’s happening? I’ve had missed calls from your agent’, and he said ‘I want to leave.’

“For me, he needs to be developing himself. West Brom, I know I spoke to them, they’re disappointed with it. They were happy with him to stay here.”

A strange call to make

Given the regularity with which Faal was starting for his loan club and the performances he was putting in in League Two, it seems a strange decision for West Brom to have recalled him halfway through the loan spell.

It seems unlikely he would be integrated into the first-team at The Hawthorns given his lack of experience at Championship level, and his performances in League Two, while impressive, have not been enough to earn him second-tier football.

The most likely outcome seems that Faal will be sent out on another loan deal to finish the season elsewhere, either at a club with a different style of play that the club thinks will suit him, or a different financial incentive both for the clubs involved and the player.

West Brom

His Albion future appears unclear as things stand, and Doncaster reassured a further update would be to come, with the focus now on where Faal will spend the second half of the season. Having made the call to terminate his loan, it will need to be worth it.
