Lewis Cox shares how West Brom will use £1.3m Taylor Gardner-Hickman fee in January transfer window

The money raised by the sale of Taylor Gardner-Hickman to Bristol City will not be reinvested by West Brom in the January transfer window, according to Lewis Cox.

The Express & Star journalist reported on Monday (15 January) that the Robins had decided to activate their £1.3million buy option six months earlier than planned, in a deal completely separate from the loan deal to bring Andi Weimann to The Hawthorns.

However, that £1.3million will not be spent on new addictions during the January transfer window, instead being used to assist with the cash flow at The Hawthorns while Albion continue negotiations over a potential takeover.

The Baggies took out a second loan from MSD Holdings earlier in the season to cover their overhead costs and the sale of Gardner-Hickman will help tide West Brom over until any potential takeover is completed.

Those in charge at The Hawthorns are understood to be happy that an agreement was reached to see the permanent deal completed sooner than initially expected.

Sensible decision

West Brom supporters would have liked to have hoped that a big seven-figure fee coming into The Hawthorns would have been spent adding to Carlos Corberan’s squad this month, but that was never likely to be the case considering the current financial situation.

Albion need to keep their head above the water until a takeover is completed and the sale of Gardner-Hickman will likely allow them to do that for a while without needing to take out another loan to cover their overhead costs.

West Brom

The Baggies still want to add to their squad with another attacker on Corberan’s shopping list, but that will likely be on some form of loan deal rather than a big-money signing. West Brom haven’t spent heavily in the last few windows and that’s not likely to change now.

While it is a shame that the Baggies have sold one of their brightest young academy talents, this deal has been in the pipeline for some time now and as Albion near a takeover, they couldn’t have received this injection of cash at a much better time.
