West Brom: Adrian Goldberg shares January transfer ‘fear’ at The Hawthorns after takeover update

Adrian Goldberg says it is a real “fear” that West Brom will have to sell a player in the January transfer window amid the latest takeover news.

The Telegraph reported last Friday [12 January] that Florida-based Shilen Patel is set to be granted exclusivity to agree on a £60million takeover of the club.

However, with a deal looking unlikely to be concluded before the end of the month, West Brom may need to bring in cash via other means.

Speaking on The Liquidator Podcast [14 January, 8m 37s], Goldberg said: “We’re all eager for these stories, but a note of caution.

“If they were in advanced talks in June, and we’re hearing about advanced talks again now, then how advanced is advanced?

“If I was a betting man, I’d say Albion are more likely to sell players in January than they are to have a new owner in January.”

Former BBC broadcaster Goldberg added: “If we don’t get a new owner, I suspect outgoings in this window may yet happen. I fear that.

“I fear someone like Tom Fellows gets picked out. If I’m honest, the likelihood is Albion may sell a player before the end of January.”

Been here before

The latest update seemingly leaked to the press last week is a positive development, but we have been here before.

Indeed, it is now over a month ago that we were told one party was expected to be granted exclusivity, then things went very quiet.

Ultimately, ending the Guochuan Lai regime at the club is all that matters, even if that means waiting another few weeks.

However, Albion have already taken out numerous loans and they need to bring in money to ensure they are not caught short financially.

The only way of doing that right now, unfortunately, is through selling a player. Fellows, as Goldberg points out, is the most valuable asset.

It may well be that the prospective buyer informs the club to keep the squad intact, which would be a huge boost.

All supporters can do is await any further updates that are provided. Hopefully, the next one is confirmation of a deal now being in place.

In other West Brom news, the Baggies are already working on another deal to follow the signing of Andreas Weimann.
