Don Goodman wants West Brom to sign new forward before January deadline, says he’s ‘certain’

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Don Goodman as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns.

Don Goodman insists West Brom need to strengthen in the attacking positions if they are to maintain their Championship promotion charge.

The Baggies have so far brought in experienced forward Andreas Weimann on loan from Bristol City during the January transfer window.

That arrival helped offset the departure of Jeremy Sarmiento, who was recalled by Brighton and Hove Albion and subsequently loaned to Ipswich Town.

Albion have to focus on loan deals and free transfers – where available – as they wait for an agreement to be struck for new owners to come on board.

Carlos Corberan’s side have kept the most clean sheets of any side in the division this term (12), while no team has shipped fewer goals (25).

However, fifth-place Albion have scored the fewest goals of any top-six side, and a whopping 15 fewer than leaders Leicester City.

As difficult as it may be in the current circumstances, Goodman wants to see West Brom target another player who can add goals to the side.

“One thing you could say is they could do with a few more goals,” he told West Brom News.

“There’s two areas really – goalscoring and their away form. If they can brush up a little on those two areas, they’ll be a shoo-in for a play-off spot.

“Having said that, they’ve had to contend with injuries, while Grady Diangana’s gone to the Africa Cup of Nations.

“Sarmiento has also gone back to Brighton and then to Ipswich. So they find themselves in a difficult place in the transfer window.

“I’m certain Carlos Corberan wants to bring players in, but it’s a case of who is out there? Who can they attract?

“They definitely need those forward and wide areas bolstered – no doubt about that.

“Matt Phillips is injured, Jed Wallace and John Swift have had their problems. So it’s an area of concern in those wide areas.”

In other West Brom news, the pressure may now be on Corberan to earn promotion this season following comments made at the DCMS Select Committee hearing.
