Don Goodman predicts if Carlos Corberan will quit West Brom amid financial strife at The Hawthorns

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Don Goodman as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns.

Don Goodman is surprised by how well West Brom are doing after admitting he was “worried” what Carlos Corberan could achieve this season.

Corberan has turned around Albion’s fortunes since penning a two-and-a-half-year deal to succeed Steve Bruce at The Hawthorns in October 2022.

The Spaniard guided West Brom from 23rd to ninth in the Championship last season upon taking over, while the Baggies are fifth with 27 games of the 2023-24 campaign played.

That is despite the club having to operate with one arm tied behind their back due to the still-uncertain takeover situation behind the scenes, which has dragged on for a number of months.

Corberan’s work in the West Midlands has not gone unnoticed, and he may attract interest from a Premier League team should Albion fall short of promotion this season.

However, Goodman believes the former Huddersfield Town manager is content in his current position, even if he has not had the financial support he would have liked.

“I think he’s really, really happy at West Bromwich Albion,” Goodman exclusively told West Brom News. “In a perfect world, I don’t think he’d want to leave.

“It’s a massive, massive football club that at the moment has no money, so therefore can’t back him in the way he’d hope.

“When he signed on the dotted line he knew that there would be restrictions and he’s had to deal with free transfers and loans. But he’s doing an amazing job.

“I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t envisage West Brom to be in the position they currently find themselves in.

“I was a little bit worried about the age of the squad, the ability and athleticism, but Carlos Corberan’s an absolute master tactician.

“When he lays down tactics, as we saw at Huddersfield, he gets teams set up solid so that they are solid and difficult to break down – as show by the fact they have the second best defence in the league – and they make it very difficult for opponents.”
