Andi Weimann shares hopeful West Brom permanent transfer verdict in new Hawthorns admission

Andi Weimann has shared that he is hopeful of earning a permanent contract at West Brom but admits that his future at The Hawthorns is in his hands.

The Austria international is Carlos Corberan’s only new arrival during the January transfer window, having joined the Spaniard’s ranks on an initial loan deal until the end of the season from Championship rivals Bristol City.

Weimann’s contract with the Robins expires at the end of the campaign and the 32-year-old has admitted that he is hoping that his performances during his loan spell will tempt Albion into offering him a permanent deal in the summer.

As quoted by the Express & Star (20 January) he said: “I am excited to be here now. It is until the end of the season and I guess it is down to me to show what I can do. Hopefully, if it all goes well we can extend it but for now until the end of the season I just want to show what I can do and we go from there.

“It is in my hands. If I don’t play well then I can’t expect to get offered a contract. If I perform and if it works we will see what happens. For now, I am ready to get minutes and get started.

“If I perform and if it works then we’ll see what happens at the end of the season, hopefully now I’ll get a few minutes against Norwich and get started.”

Wait and see

This initial loan deal has turned out to be the perfect outcome for West Brom as they effectively get to try Weimann before they buy the Austrian and the ball is entirely in their court when it comes to negotiating the Austrian’s long-term future.

It seems pretty clear that the 32-year-old won’t be extending his stay with Bristol City come the end of the season, so should he impress at The Hawthorns, Albion will be able to make his stay permanent without having to pay the Robins a single penny.

However, should he struggle to adapt to life under Corberan and fail to have a positive impact in the second half of the season, Albion can let him walk away without taking a financial hit.

Hopefully, Weimann can hit the ground running at West Brom and play a big part as Albion push for a playoff place in the second half of the season. There’s certainly a contract to be earned if his performances are at the right level.
