West Brom: Jayson Molumby may have started last game under Carlos Corberan after fresh blow emerges at The Hawthorns

Jayson Molumby may have unfortunately started his last game for West Brom with his damaging injury blow that will keep him out for months.

The Express & Star journalist Lewis Cox shared on his Twitter account (20 January) that the Baggies midfielder will now undergo surgery on his foot issue and could miss at least three weeks out of action.

The Republic of Ireland international hasn’t featured since the Baggies’ 1-0 defeat at the hands of Swansea City but was expected to return against Norwich on Saturday (20 January) having missed the wins over Aldershot Town and Blackburn Rovers.

However, he was absent again for the 2-0 defeat at Carrow Road with Carlos Corberan confirming his expected absence, now Molumby faces at least three months on the sidelines.

And Cox taking to his Twitter after the game, posted: “Insult to injury…sorry. Jayson Molumby to miss at least three months with surgery required on foot issue.”

While Molumby hasn’t been a regular starter for West Brom this season, the 24-year-old appeared to have begun to find his feet in the Baggies’ midfield over the festive period.

Unfortunately, it looks as though he won’t be able to build upon those performances in the next few months, and things could be even more worse after Okay Yokuslu came off with a knock against Norwich on Saturday.

It now leaves Corberan desperately short at the heart of defensive midfield once again with Nathaniel Chalobah and Alex Mowatt his only options should Yokuslu now be ruled out too.

But, it’s a sorry situation for Molumby who has been looking to re-establish himself in the West Brom team all season having just started 12 of their 28 Championship games.

It hasn’t been the best of seasons for the Republic of Ireland man who has also seen his minutes limited at international level as a result of his situation at The Hawthorns.

The box-to-box midfielder was linked with a summer move away during the transfer window with Leeds United reportedly interested [Alan Nixon, 18 June] but no such move materialised with Corberan having a depleted squad at his disposal.

Now, with the injury, Molumby may be out for longer than the three months mooted which could take him right to the end of the campaign.

With his contract ending in June 2025 and West Brom’s need to sell some of their marketable assets this year, Molumby’s start against Swansea on New Year’s Day could well be his last.
