West Brom transfer news: Tom Fellows future at The Hawthorns decided amid Everton, Leicester and Southampton interest

The new West Brom contract for Tom Fellows is a “major fillip” for the club and decides the exit-linked youngster’s future in the January transfer window, according to Joe Chapman.

The Birmingham Live journalist reacted via Twitter after the club announced on 26 January that the academy product had signed a three and a half year extension to remain at The Hawthorns until at least 2027.

Fellows has been attracting transfer interest, with Everton emerging as a Premier League suitor on top of Championship threats from the likes of Leicester and Southampton [Daily Mail, 11 November], but that has now been “put to bed” by the latest news.

Chapman wrote: “WBA announce that Tom Fellows has agreed a new contract with the club which runs until the summer of 2027. A major fillip for Albion to put any doubts to bed and secure Fellows’ long term future.”

Locked in

This development should be a major bonus for Carlos Corberan and suggests that perhaps the long-awaited West Brom takeover is now closer.

It had already been reported that the prospective new owners wanted the 20-year-old to remain at the club, with his previous contract set to expire in the summer.

The wage-bill at The Hawthorns remains an issue despite the impending change at the top, meaning Corberan has been at more risk of his squad being weakened this month that strengthened.

In theory this contract news should ward off interested parties past the deadline at least, but unless the finances are brought under control the attacker could still be targeted in future windows.

At the very least securing him to new terms for multiple years would prevent him from leaving for just compensation in the summer and mean West Brom bank a proper transfer fee.

But the manager and the fans alike will hope this is the sign of things to come in a new era at the club.
