‘Huge’ West Brom update as new transfer wage cap in place ahead of February 1
West Brom have capped their wage ceiling to just £10,000 per week for any potential new signings, according to the Daily Mail.
The newspaper reported via its website [27 January] that loan signings are the way for the Baggies in the remainder of the January transfer window.
One example of potential spending mismanagement is Kyle Bartley, with the top earner said to be bringing in £38,000-a-week, which is described as “huge” in the post-COVID world.
It doesn’t make sense
Post-covid, Bartley’s current wage is extortionate for the Championship. Although he is a veteran at the club and has probably earned the right to have such a high income, the Baggies are clearly suffering.
The 32-year-old has made 185 appearances for West Brom since arriving from Swansea City in 2018 and continues to be a vital player under Corberan. However, as one of the older players in the squad, it could be about time that he signs a cheaper deal to allow the club to sign new players for the future.
However, Bartley’s income is just one issue for West Brom, who are unable to purchase the next generation of players to come after the veteran defender. The club have already loaned in West Ham’s Callum Marshall and Bristol City’s Andreas Weimann.
But like any loan player, Marshall will return to his parent club once the current season is over unless the deal lasts a season longer. The point is that West Brom will have to learn to cope without them once they inevitably depart.

With no ability to pay fees for players permanently, the squad could be set for a very difficult season in the next campaign once the loanees return to their parent clubs. Could it be time for a younger player to take Bartley’s place?
If so, it could allow for funds to open up and help Corberan make important additions at The Hawthorns.
In other West Brom news, a Premier League player has sent a three-word message to Andi Weimann after a career milestone for the forward.
