Robbie Savage makes prediction for West Brom v Wolves as he gets Black Country Derby stat completely wrong

Pundit Robbie Savage believes the decibels at The Hawthorns will be “off the scale” when West Brom take on Wolves.

Carlos Corberan’s side will host the Premier League outfit in an FA Cup fourth round encounter on Sunday (28 January).

The Baggies currently sit fifth place in the Championship table, with their upcoming opponents sitting 11th in the top flight.

“The last Black Country derby, three years ago, gave Sam Allardyce his first win as West Brom manager,” Savage wrote for the Mirror (page 61, 27 Jan). “Sadly for the fans, it was behind closed doors during football’s season in lockdown. And sadly for Big Sam, it proved a false dawn in his efforts to save the Baggies from relegation.

“But the decibels will be off the scale at The Hawthorns on Sunday when the old rivals meet in the FA Cup fourth round.

“Wolves and West Brom is one of those provincial derbies which often gets forgotten about further afield. But I am looking forward to a full-blooded FA Cup tie awash with passion.”

Huge clash

It is a massive game for both clubs, with plenty of pride at stake at The Hawthorns, along with a place in the next round of the FA Cup.

The next instalment of the Black Country derby certainly won’t be a quiet affair, but Savage does actually get it wrong in terms of the last meeting between the two clubs.

As opposed to that 3-2 victory at Molineux in January 2021 that the pundit was referring to, West Brom then played Wolves in the reverse fixture at The Hawthorns in May that year, with the game ending in a 1-1 draw.

Baggies fans will now be in full voice for the meeting on Sunday as they will look to provide a hostile atmosphere for the travelling players.

Corberan has impressed in the Albion dugout this season, and now has the chance to continue to impress by toppling a Premier League club.

West Brom

But Wolves also have a very talented boss on their hands in Gary O’Neil, who will be doing all he can to avoid a shock exit from the competition.
