West Brom: Don Goodman mentions Matheus Pereira as he blasts Guochuan Lai for Hawthorns mismanagement

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Don Goodman as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns.

Don Goodman has blasted Guochuan Lai over his mismanagement of West Brom and says he is unsure just where all the money has gone.

Lai’s time at The Hawthorns is coming to an end as US entrepreneur Shilen Patel is now in advanced talks to purchase West Brom.

The Tampa Bay Business Journal reported on Friday (26 January) that the takeover is “nearing a conclusion”.

Albion are currently relying on loans to help with day-to-day running costs as Lai is no longer putting his own funds into the club.

The Baggies sold Dara O’Shea to Burnley for £7million last summer [Express & Star] and there have been fears among supporters of others being moved on this month.

However, with no other players able to attract a fee close to the £15m landed for Matheus Pereira in 2021, Goodman accepts the takeover must go through as soon as possible.

“Lai would have bought the club with the best intentions in mind, thinking he could keep them in the Premier League, and then back into the Premier League, but it just hasn’t happened,” Goodman told West Brom News.

“I find it difficult to comprehend how a club like West Brom can have all those years in the Premier League, then the parachute payments, then sell someone like Matheus Pereira for £15million.

“I just struggle to comprehend where the money has gone. That’s a bit of a worry and it’s clearly a club that’s been mismanaged.

“The sooner they can get a takeover sorted the better for all concerned. How soon that is, I have no clue.”

In other West Brom news, Adrian Goldberg has hit out at a “ludicrous” situation the club will have to navigate next month.
