Journalist shares what lone West Brom fan did to Wolves staff in technical area amid pitch invasion

A lone West Brom fan walked into the technical area and nodded to the Wolves staff during the Black Country Derby clash.

That is according to Express & Star journalist Matt Maher after the match on Sunday (28 January) was stopped due to crowd trouble.

The referee was forced to pause the FA Cup fourth round clash at The Hawthorns with just over 10 minutes remaining.

“With the game stopped and the police battling with supporters in the corner of the Halfords Lane and Brummie Road Ends, a West Brom fan in a flat cap walks nonchalantly through the technical area, nods politely to the Wolves staff, before holding his scarf in front of the away fans,” Maher wrote on X.

Ugly scenes

There really were ugly scenes at The Hawthorns, with crowd trouble breaking out after Matheus Cunha netted the second goal of the game in the 78th minute.

The Wolves attacker showed his composure in the box to put the visitors 2-0 ahead, with Pedro Neto having scored the opener in the 38th minute.

Tensions were always going to be high during this clash given how it is a fierce derby, but such scenes are not welcome at a football match.

The fans causing the trouble should, of course, be penalised as soon as possible, but getting to grips with exactly what happened may take some time.

The home supporters were more than up for the derby clash, as were the home players, who battled well on the pitch but were ultimately undone by the Premier League quality of Wolves.

It remains to be seen what the outcome will be from this one regarding the issues at The Hawthorns, but it is not the way this derby should have played out.
