Sky Sports pundit reacts to ‘troubling’ scenes at The Hawthorns during West Brom clash v Wolves, ‘dark ages’

Gareth Ainsworth has reacted to the “troubling” scenes during the FA Cup clash between West Brom and Wolves after crowd trouble saw the game postponed like in the “dark ages”.

The away side had taken a 2-0 lead in the fourth-round clash at The Hawthorns on Sunday (28 January) through Matheus Cunha, before trouble in the Birmingham Road end saw the players exit the field while the police tried to calm things down.

Sunday’s incident was almost a throwback to the crowd trouble experienced at football in the 1980s and Sky pundit and former Wycombe manager Ainsworth was deeply angered and concerned by the scenes.

Speaking on Sky Sports News (28 January) he said: “There’s troubling scenes now because at the West Brom end, it looks as though there may have been some Wolves supporters in there celebrating because it’s all gone off now.

“These are scenes that nobody wants to see in football anymore, it’s back to the dark ages here because there’s a bit of crowd trouble here and the referee has had to stop play. There are a lot of fans spilt out onto the pitch, there are stewards involved, there’s things being thrown.

“It’s not nice to see.”

Awful

Everybody likes to see derby matches for big tackles and passion from both sides, but what happened on Sunday was nothing short of ridiculous. Both sets of supporters at that end of The Hawthorns caused a scene that nobody wants to see.

How Wolves supporters were allegedly able to find their way into the home end of the ground remains unknown, but it is worrying that such a big incident was allowed to happen so quickly after the second goal went in.

Sunday’s FA Cup clash should have been an occasion for both sets of supporters to enjoy and get involved with. Instead, it turned into nothing more than a ridiculous brawl that really marred such a big occasion.

Hopefully, nobody will have been harmed too badly and measures will be put in place to stop similar happening again.
