Rishi Sunak shares ‘extremely concerning’ warning after what happened in West Brom v Wolves

Rishi Sunak has spoken out following the crowd trouble at The Hawthorns, via his spokesperson, as Wolves beat West Brom 2-0 in the FA Cup, calling for those involved to face bans from football.

The FA Cup Fourth Round tie was suspended for 34 minutes as a result of violence in the crowd following the second Wolves goal, prompting the Prime Minister to speak out.

Sunak has warned that there is no place for that behaviour in football and that anybody involved will face criminal charges, as everybody should be able to watch their team play without the threat of violence.

As shared by The Sun [29 January], the Prime Minister’s spokesperson shared: “Those scenes are extremely concerning. There’s no place for that kind of behaviour in football.

“The PM believes everyone should be able to watch their team without any threats of violence or antisocial behaviour. And he firmly expects anyone involved to face criminal charges and to be banned from future games.”

National recognition

The widespread coverage of the incident, now resulting in the Prime Minister feeling the need to speak out, should show the general attitude towards the situation, and the keenness of everybody to eradicate this sort of thing from the game.

Comparisons to football in the 70s and 80s seem farfetched, with the reaction to the incident proving that there is still a zero-tolerance attitude to football fighting and crowd violence aside from a few morons in those crowds that insist upon it.

West Brom

The Prime Minister’s calls for those involved to be struck with banning orders and criminal charges is the only way to ensure they are punished accordingly and dealt with rather than a simple slap on the wrists.

West Brom and the West Midlands Police will continue to investigate the situation, and there have been calls to look into how the Wolves fan(s) was able to get into the home end, to begin with, which is thought to have been the spark to light the touchpaper.
