West Brom ‘very hot’ on deadline-busting move for Huddersfield Town midfielder Brahima Diarra

West Brom want to sign Huddersfield Town midfielder Brahima Diarra before the transfer deadline on 1 February and are “very hot” on the deal amid interest from nine Championship clubs, according to Sebastien Denis.

The Foot Mercato journalist reported on 31 January that a Ligue 1 club have been joined by a host of Championship outfits in the race for his signature, with West Brom and Bristol City named as potential suitors.

Diarra’s contract at Huddersfield expires in June, opening up the opportunity for clubs to explore a deal as Huddersfield may look to cash in rather than lose him for free.

On a post translated into English, Denis wrote: “At the end of his contract in June with Huddersfield Town, box-to-box midfielder Brahima Diarra (20 years old) could return to France by Thursday evening.

“A Ligue 1 club is very hot on him as are several clubs including Bristol City and WBA.”

An exciting deal

Diarra has made 17 appearances in the Championship so far this season for Huddersfield, and while the team has struggled towards the bottom end of the league, and have recently sacked ex-Baggies boss Darren Moore, he has stood out as a bright point.

At just 20 years old, the midfielder already has plenty of experience at this level. He joined Huddersfield at 16 years old and has gone on to make 39 appearances for the club, as well as an additional 12 on loan for Harrogate Town.

The report from Foot Mercato described Diarra as the “darling” of the Mali under-23 side, showing how highly rated he is in his home country who boast the likes of Spurs’ Yves Bissouma and Crystal Palace’s Cheick Doucoure among their senior international midfielders.

If Albion can pull this one off in the latter stages of the transfer window, with less than 48 hours until the deadline, Carlos Corberan will be pleased after he made a new midfielder a priority following the injury to Jayson Molumby.

In other West Brom news, a double deadline day deal is now on the cards.
