Aston Villa transfer news as West Brom move for Calum Chambers collapses

Calum Chambers’ deadline day transfer from Aston Villa to West Brom has collapsed and the deal is now off, according to Lewis Cox.

The Express and Star journalist reported on Thursday (1 February) that the last-ditch transfer has fallen through as Carlos Corberan’s side were only willing to agree to a loan deal, with that not on the cards.

West Brom are now only expected to make one addition ahead of Thursday (1 February) night’s deadline, with Celtic winger Mikey Johnston, expected to be confirmed as an Albion player sooner rather than later.

Bit of a shame

Chambers would have been an excellent addition to Corberan’s side for the remainder of the season, with his ability to play both in defensive midfield and across the backline, but it now seems unlikely that West Brom will be able to get it over the line.

The former Arsenal defender is a spare part at Villa Park currently and is yet to make a single appearance in the Premier League this term, so it is only natural that Unai Emery’s side would prefer to get him off of their books permanently.

The current financial situation at The Hawthorns means that the Baggies were always going to struggle players permanently this month. A temporary deal would have allowed them to consider their options come the end of the season instead.

However, the positive aspect from a Baggies’ perspective is the fact that the deal to bring Johnston to the midlands appears to be going off without a hitch and Albion supporters should expect an announcement any moment now.
