Chris Lepkowksi issues transfer verdict on West Brom move for Aston Villa defender Calum Chambers
Chris Lepkowski is gutted at the failure of West Brom to secure the services of Aston Villa defender Calum Chambers on Transfer Deadline Day.
The former Birmingham Mail journalist believes a lot of energy was expedited in the attempt to sign the former Arsenal centre-back.
Express and Star’s Lewis Cox reported that the interest from the Baggies was genuine and it probably did not go further than initial talks.
Lepkowski wrote: “Feels like a fair amount of effort was expended here. You’d have thought his pathway to us would have been established (and I suspect his wages troublesome too). A shame, he’d have been useful.”
Bad process?
This reflects a potentially misguided approach to transfer dealings.
While pursuing experienced players like Chambers could strengthen the squad, dedicating significant energy to a deal that ultimately falls through suggests a lack of foresight or effective negotiation strategy.
Instead of focusing solely on high-profile targets, the Baggies could benefit from a more balanced approach.
This could involve identifying and prioritizing players whose acquisition aligns with the club’s long-term objectives and budget constraints.
Chambers felt like a rushed last-minute deal and that’s not right given he was on the market throughout the month.
Additionally, establishing clear communication channels and understanding potential obstacles, such as wage demands, early in the negotiation process could prevent wasted resources and disappointment.
Moreover, diversifying transfer targets beyond Premier League players might offer more viable options within the club’s financial parameters.
In other West Brom news, the Baggies are now extremely keen on securing a deal for a Premier League striker in January who made headlines this season.
