Hull City make formal bid to beat West Brom in last-ditch deal for Calum Chambers
West Brom are set to taste defeat in a last-ditch move for Calum Chambers after Hull City tabled an official offer for the Aston Villa defender.
Reports from Turkey suggest Hull have made a move for the ex-Arsenal man, with West Brom holding talks to sign the defender in a last-gasp transfer to bolster Carlos Corberan’s squad.
It seemed as though the club thought they may be able to get a deal done for Chambers on deadline day, with the player preferring a move to the Midlands and being able to offer regular first-team football.
But Hull are also in a promotion hunt and have been keen to sign a new defender during this window, and Liam Rosenior and the club’s owners seem to be making a bigger push to get the deal over the line.
Corberan has got solid centre-back options in Semi Ajayi, Kyle Bartley, Erik Pieters and Cedric Kipre already and while Chambers can also play at full-back or in midfield, there is no guarantee of regular football.
Financially the Baggies are in big trouble right now and with Villa happy to let him go, that is what opened the door to a move. But if it comes down to several offers then Chambers is likely to go with the one that suits him best financially, and that is going to leave West Brom out in the cold.
It’s another killer blow for West Brom in their hunt for promotion as Corberan is constantly battling against injuries and a lack of funds, while the teams around him are always strengthening and able to spend to bolster their squad.
Once again the owners and the lack of funds are letting the club down and if the defensive injuries the club have suffered end up costing the Baggies promotion once again, then this is a deal that could be looked back on as the turning point.
In other West Brom news, seven-figure deal agreed for starlet to leave Hawthorns for good on Deadline Day.
