West Brom now in talks to sign Calum Chambers in late Deadline Day deal from Aston Villa

West Brom are in talks with Aston Villa to sign Calum Chambers ahead of the transfer deadline, according to Mike McGrath.

The Telegraph journalist shared on his personal X account (1 February) that the Baggies are in talks with Aston Villa with Carlos Corberan wanting Chambers at the club before the 11 pm deadline on Thursday.

The 29-year-old defender has made just three appearances in all competitions this season, amounting to just 178 minutes [Transfermarkt], while having vast experience with 176 Premier League appearances with Unai Emery sharing earlier this month that he is allowed to leave.

McGrath posted: “Aston Villa centre-back Calum Chambers is wanted at West Brom and there are talks over a move.”

Smart

This is yet another smart deal for West Brom having already completed deals to sign Callum Marshall from West Ham and Andreas Weimann from Bristol City.

Like Weimann, Chambers has bags of experience in the Premier League and is certainly more than capable of immediately coming in at The Hawthorns and making a vast impact.

The Championship shouldn’t be too difficult for Chambers and he certainly possesses all the experience, qualities and leadership Corberan needs to strengthen his squad ahead of a gruelling fixture list.

The only concern that may arise for West Brom is Chambers’ lack of match practice so far this season but that shouldn’t present too much of a problem.

The Baggies are spoilt for choice at centre-back with Semi Ajayi, Cedrick Kipre and Kyle Bartley all at the top of their games right now and Chambers represents a smart addition.

But what does mean for experienced Erik Pieters? Could he now quit the club ahead of Thursday’s deadline? Very interesting developments at The Hawthorns.

In other West Brom news, a Baggies star has seemingly mocked a former teammate as West Ham complete a new signing.
