Ross McCrorie sends four-word message as Celtic transfer finalised in last 24 hours
Ex-Rangers man Ross McCrorie has sent a message of support to on-loan Celtic forward Mikey Johnston after he finalised his temporary loan switch to West Brom.
The Baggies announced the last-minute arrival of the Celtic winger on Deadline Day (West Brom Official Club Website, 1 February).
Johnston will now spend the rest of the season on loan at The Hawthorns where he will look to make an impact as Carlos Corberan’s side push for promotion to the Premier League.
A Republic of Ireland international, Johnston has earned eight caps for his nation since making his debut in March 2023, scoring twice in that time. At club level, he has played 92 times for the Hoops, finding the back of the net 13 times and providing 12 assists in Glasgow.
Upon his arrival in the West Midlands, Johnston took to his personal Instagram account (1 February) to share his delight at making the move, writing, “Happy to be here West Brom, let’s get to work.”
His comments were full of supportive messages, including one from a former foe. Ex-Rangers midfielder McCrorie, now of Bristol City, wrote, “All the best mate” as Johnston finalised a move which sees him join the 25-year-old in the Championship.
McCrorie came through the youth ranks with the Gers, and moved to Aberdeen before making the switch to England to join up with the Robins this past summer.
Meanwhile, Johnston made his name in football in Celtic’s youth system, and as a result, both players will know all too well the rivalry which divides the two biggest clubs in Scotland, and while there is often no love lost between the two sets of supporters, it appears the two players have some kinder sentiment reserved for one another.
Having made a similar career move, McCrorie will probably have some useful advice for Johnston when the two players meet, which might well happen when West Brom and Bristol City face off at The Hawthorns on 16 March.
It will be interesting to see if the support is put to one side in that contest, and should they come face to face on the pitch, if an Old Firm-style tackle rears its head.
