West Brom: ‘Significant’ development in Newcastle bid to sign Tom Fellows before 11pm last night

Tom Fellows signing a contract extension with West Brom was “significant” as Newcastle United showed interest in the 20-year-old, according to the Express and Star.

As reported online by the local news outlet (2 February), the Magpies were among several clubs thought to be keeping an eye on Fellows following his breakthrough season in the Championship.

Fellows’ West Brom contract was set to expire this summer, but the Baggies announced via their official club website (26 January) that the winger had signed a three-and-a-half-year contract extension at The Hawthorns.

It leaves the club in a strong position to either resist any offers which arrive in the summer or to have the power to at least negotiate a reasonable fee for the talented youngster.

Loyalty

West Brom supporters and Carlos Corberan will be delighted by how the Albion academy graduate has acted.

Despite interest from Premier League clubs, and one competing as high up England’s top flight as Newcastle, Fellows chose to commit his future to his boyhood club rather than look to force a move away from the West Midlands in January.

Even if he had stayed beyond January but not penned a new deal, that storyline would have carried out throughout the rest of the season and might have disrupted West Brom’s momentum.

His decision to sign a new contract and put to bed any rumours of an exit demonstrates his love and affection for the club.

Fellows has found the back of the net twice in all competitions this season and will continue looking to help the team where he can for the remainder of the campaign as they push for a return to the Premier League.

In other West Brom news, the club rejected a seven-figure approach in January for another one of their talented youngsters.
