Gabby Agbonlahor slams journalist over Andi Weimann in West Brom win v Birmingham

Gabby Agbonlahor has told a Daily Mail journalist to “shut up” over his suggestion that Andi Weimann was “spectacularly stupid” after scoring the West Brom winner vs Birmingham City.

The ex-Aston Villa striker hit back at Tom Collomosse via Twitter on 3 February over his criticism of the former Villans attacker’s celebration at The Hawthorns in the 1-0 Baggies victory.

The match was the first at the ground since crowd trouble marred the 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Wolves on 28 January.

Collomosse had written: “Andi Weimann, a former Aston Villa player, scored the winner for WBA here and just goaded the Birmingham fans. After everything that happened here last week, that is spectacularly stupid behaviour.”

Agbonlahor later replied: “Shut up Tom you Wally”.

Express & Star’s Lewis Cox posted footage on Twitter after Weimann “gave it the big’en” in front of the away fans.

Weimann the difference as West Brom bounce back against rivals

If it didn’t come in the immediate wake of the ugly disturbances in the Wolves game then the fact that Weimann had celebrated in front of the Birmingham fans would have been only expected.

There probably is an argument that it was unwise in the circumstances to risk a repeat down in the same area of the ground against another rival.

That wouldn’t have excused a violent reaction either way, and thankfully there wasn’t, but the game still couldn’t pass off without incident thanks to the depressing emergence of alleged racism from the stands directed at Juninho Bacuna [Sky Sports, 3 February].

Agbonlahor clearly doesn’t accept any of the criticism of Weimann, but whether that is based on the Villa element to the Austrian’s past or full stop isn’t entirely clear.

On the footballing front it was a very important three points for Carlos Corberan’s side to keep them well in the play-off hunt, and in the 85th minute it was excellent timing for the 32-year-old to score his first Baggies goal.

After 129 Aston Villa appearances, and 21 for Wolves, before joining West Brom Weimann will know better than most the lay of the land with the local rivalries and he came up big for the Albion in this one.
