Tony Mowbray says two words to Tony Brown after West Brom win v Birmingham City

Jonny Drury has revealed the two words Tony Mowbray greeted Tony Brown with after West Brom won 1-0 against Birmingham City at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

Bomber Brown made 720 appearances and scored 279 goals across his 17 years at the Black Country club, winning the FA Cup in 1968.

Brown, who’s now a co-commentator for BBC Radio WM, was present at the match as Andreas Weimann scored his first Baggies goal, with the Birmingham boss quick to recognise a true great of the sport.

The Express and Star journalist wrote via X on Saturday (3 February): “Tony Mowbray walks into his press conference and says ‘hello mate’ and puts his thumb up to Tony Brown. Class recognises class.”

A touch of class after West Brom victory

Many will know Mowbray as a gentleman anyway, but the little moment between him and Brown adds just that little bit of extra class.

Having managed at The Hawthorns earlier in his managerial career, Mowbray will have some sort of connection with the club legend and it shows in the moment they shared.

Also having just lost his first league game since taking over as Birmingham manager, conceding the only goal of the game with five minutes left, it would have been easy for Mowbray to be in a grump.

Brown’s presence at the game might have just been that extra bit of luck the Baggies needed to get back to winning ways, following defeats on the bounce to Norwich City and Wolves.

Weimann clearly took inspiration from the club legend, firing home his first goal in West Brom colours since arriving on a six-month loan from Bristol City.
