West Brom: Cedric Kipre contract view at The Hawthorns emerges from Don Goodman
West Brom are as good a club that out-of-contract pair Alex Mowatt and Cedric Kipre will find, according to Don Goodman.
Both players are among those due to see their existing deals at The Hawthorns expire at the end of the campaign.
Mowatt has played 27 times for Albion in the Championship this season, while Kipre has been used 28 times – each of those as a starter.
The takeover uncertainty at the club means negotiating new deals is difficult, although Tom Fellows did recently put pen to paper.
However, Goodman does not believe Albion should fear losing either player as they will both likely want to stay on at the club if given the choice.
“With the greatest of respect to either of them, they’re not going to get a better club than West Bromwich Albion in the summer, even on a free,” Goodman told West Brom News.
“I think this is the peak, the limit, of their playing powers. In both cases, they weren’t first-team regulars that long ago but have come into the fold and done well.
“Having said all that, I don’t think there is a club in a better position of getting into the Premier League than West Brom. They won’t get a better club.
“How it would look in terms of them renegotiating their deals, I don’t know. It’s all down to money.
“But I think they’d both probably favour staying at West Brom rather than leaving in the summer when their contracts are up.”
Takeover uncertainty at The Hawthorns
Tying down talented youngster Fellows to a new contract amid interest from elsewhere was a priority for the club and full credit to them for doing so last month.
Fellows is now under contract until 2027 and, while that does not necessarily mean he will stay here that long, at least he guarantees a fee if he leaves in the next couple of years.
Mowatt and Kipre are not the only two out of contract in the summer, but losing them would be a blow given how often they have played this term.
That is a stark reality as the summer approaches, but hopefully there will be new owners in place long before then.
As Goodman says, West Brom is the perfect place for both men right now given it is a club on the up and with Premier League aspirations.
Albion will also know that they would have to replace both players if they were to depart, and they do not exactly have millions to play with.
That, if it was not already abundantly clear, is why getting this takeover over the line before the summer is so imperative.
