Don Goodman rages after what he saw in West Brom v Ipswich, lauds ‘Brilliant’ Tom Fellows
Don Goodman was raging at the Ipswich defence for a “fatal error” which led to Tom Fellows scoring the opening goal of the game for West Brom.
The young winger dribbled from the halfway line and beat two defenders before firing low and hard into the corner to give his side the lead midway through the first half, with teams going on to play out a 2-2 draw.
And while on commentary for Sky Sports (10 February, 12:52), Goodman hailed the “brilliant” youngster but was seemingly furious with the way the home team defended the attack.
“It’s dribbling power, it’s running power and it’s done for Ipswich Town,” he said. “Woolfenden probably just gets a little too close and feels he can get there before Tom Fellows but he doesn’t.
“It starts in the right-back position and they work it really well. Woolfenden can only engage if he’s going to win that ball and he doesn’t. That’s the fatal error, because Fellows is quick, he’s strong, he’s direct.
“Once he gets done there he has to drop off and not allow that to happen. Once Fellows is in behind, danger. Brilliant finish. Hits it hard, hits it low, through the defender’s legs. No chance for Hladky and a massive goal.”
Sensational goal for West Brom and Tom Fellows
West Brom were arguably the better team at that point of the game despite a lack of possession, and Fellows was outstanding throughout the half and a constant threat. But scoring goals has been an issue all season.
The pass into him was a bit of a hit and hope into an area but the way he used his body to avoid the challenge and protect the ball, then used his pace to get in behind was fantastic and top level quality.
The team has missed that level of ruthlessness in the final third this season and Fellows has been a huge bright spark since coming into the team, and is offering the fans a great hope.
Goodman gave him credit but seemed to blame the goal more on bad defending, which seems unfair and a little too critical considering just how good Fellows was for his part in it.
It’s no surprise there were Premier League clubs said to be showing an interest in his signature, but thankfully he put pen to paper on a new deal at The Hawthorns instead.
