West Brom: Tony Brown complains about Alex Palmer incident v Ipswich, he apologised to teammates

Tony Brown has complained about what Alex Palmer did in the first half of the 2-2 West Brom draw against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday (10 February).

Speaking on co-commentary for BBC Radio WM (01:06pm), the pundit said it’s exactly what he’d been talking about earlier on in the match as the Baggies keeper gave away the ball when trying to play out from the back against the Tractor Boys.

After the 27-year-old was spotted apologising to his teammates following the incident, Brown said sometimes keepers “overplay” and that is when “you’re going to get caught out” as the shot-stopper got away with it on this occasion at Portman Road.

“That’s exactly what we’ve been talking about,” said Brown. “It’s alright sometimes goalkeepers playing, but sometimes they overplay. If you overplay, you’re going to get caught out.”

Lucky escape for West Brom against Ipswich Town

It was a lucky escape for West Brom and Palmer as the keeper was fortunate to not be punished for his error in the first half against Ipswich.

While playing out from the back does have many benefits, there is a time and place of when to do it and the keeper got it wrong on this occasion.

It isn’t something you can afford to do every single time, particularly away from home, as it just invites pressure and puts more emphasis on every ball being perfect to avoid handing the opposition an opportunity.

West Brom hired Carlos Corberan in October 2022 after Steve Bruce left The Hawthorns.

That moment could have undone what was an excellent first half from Albion as Tom Fellows’ strike gave them a lead at half-time.

Although Carlos Corberan will have been frustrated to see the mistake from Palmer, he won’t be too critical of his keeper after he’s been in superb form this season.
