West Brom v Ipswich: Don Goodman reacts live on Sky Sports to unimaginable Daryl Dike incident

Don Goodman called it “heartbreaking” after West Brom striker Daryl Dike was stretchered off with what appeared to be yet another serious injury at Ipswich Town.

The Sky Sports pundit reacted live on the match commentary (10 February) after the American striker’s substitute appearance at Portman Road was ended after just 10 minutes in the 2-2 draw.

Dike, 23, burst into tears as he was driven towards the tunnel on the back of a golf cart after apparently suffering a fourth major set back since arriving at The Hawthorns three winter windows back, with Goodman suggesting the weight of the latest development was unimaginable.

He said (1.55pm): “You pray, you just pray this is nothing serious because he has had the most horrendous luck with injuries. Just collapses under his own steam doesn’t he? Heartbreaking. It doesn’t look good…

“Thoughts are with him. It looks serious. I think that reaction there tells you all you need to know… There aren’t any words. I can’t even imagine what he is feeling right at this moment.”

Dike news heartbreaking as West Brom striker injured again at Ipswich

It was difficult to watch as the emotions that Dike was clearly going through sunk in with his Baggies career potentially set for yet another serious set back.

All at the club will be hoping that this one doesn’t turn out to be as serious as the ones that have kept him out for months at a time over the past two years, but the initial suggestions weren’t positive.

The luck that the West Brom striker has had since his £7million-plus move from Orlando City [The Athletic] is surely some of the worst in English football, and the psychological strain he must have been put through with multiple lengthy rehabs already is something only those who have experienced something similar will be able to relate to.

He will likely be wondering if his time at The Hawthorns will ever truly get off the ground, having been able to feature for the club just 31 times amid fears of lasting effects from previous injuries.

On a collective level it is clearly the last thing Carlos Corberan will have wanted to see, with the likes of Josh Maja and Matt Phillips already long-term attacking absentees.

But it is hard to see past the individual at this stage after seeing Dike’s face as he was taken off the pitch in Suffolk.
