Robert Earnshaw names ‘Serious’ issue for West Brom in Championship promotion race
Robert Earnshaw believes West Brom have a “serious” issue with scoring goals that they must correct if they want to earn promotion to the Premier League.
Speaking live on Sky Sports (10 February), the former Baggies striker was asked about the team’s problems in front of goal this season with just 41 scored before the clash with Ipswich on Saturday afternoon.
And Earnshaw believes that while they’re a very good team they need to improve in front of goal if they really want a chance of getting promoted back to the top flight.
“No not enough,” he said. “They’ve kept the most clean sheets so in one way they’ve done well defensively. But nowhere near enough goals going forward.
“They’ve struggled. They’ve got very good creative players going forward, but nobody to put it in the back of the net. At the crucial time, in the box, put it in the back of the net.
“Weimann coming in maybe helps that. They’re a very, very good team. But they’re going to need to score more goals.
“If they’re serious and want to go up [to the Premier League], they need to score more goals.”
Carlos Corberan knows big West Brom problem
It’s clear for anyone that has been watching the Baggies this season that scoring goals has been the team’s biggest problem.
But it’s also clear that Corberan knows that judging from his January transfer window business where three attackers were brought in.
Obviously the team lost Jeremy Sarmiento through no fault of their own, but with Matty Phillips out for most of the season, Daryl Dike’s fitness unreliable at best and Josh Maja missing a chunk too reinforcements were needed.
Andreas Weimann has already made an impact with his debut goal against Birmingham, while Callum Marshall and Mikey Johnston will both be hungry to make an impact too while on loan.
Corberan has looked to address the problem, and the team makes enough chances that they should score more regularly, so fingers crossed the new additions can make a difference.
