West Brom Academy gems could follow Tom Fellows after Carlos Corberan comments
West Brom academy stars have all received a further incentive to get into the first team at The Hawthorns, as Carlos Corberan urged them to follow in the footsteps of Tom Fellows.
Fellows is having his breakthrough season under Corberan this year and has become a mainstay in the first-team, contributing to three goals and two assists in his last five competitive starts.
Birmingham Live journalist Joe Chapman took to X [14 February] to share the boss’ praise of Fellows: “He’s a special talent. It’s important for the club to have young players with long contracts with us. We need to try to replicate it in more cases.”
Tom Fellows pathing the way for West Brom gems
Any player in the West Brom Academy who was looking to find their way into the first team in the coming months, even years, will have been inspired by the manager’s comment with a clear pathway becoming clear.
Fellows spent last season on loan at League Two side Crawley where he hardly impressed, not scoring a single goal and picking up just two assists in 39 games, so his emergence this season in the Championship has come as a shock.
It will also serve as hope to Baggies players currently on loan whether they have impressed or not, that if the pathway is there to make an impact on the first team at The Hawthorns, they will be afforded the chance.
The likes of Caleb Taylor and Zac Ashworth, both currently performing well on loan with League One title challengers Bolton, will see Corberan’s comments as a challenge, and should look to follow the path Fellows has taken, returning from loan and taking his chance when it came.
Carlos Corberan will provide a boost to the academy
This is not the first time the boss has spoken glowingly about the academy side either. In the summer, the boss expressed a willingness to use any young player who proved they are good enough – with Fellows the one to step up.
Having received Category One status over the summer, Albion were allowed to remain in the Premier League 2, where the under-21 side currently sit 19th out of 26 participants.
The West Brom academy has been let down in recent years, as displayed by Aston Villa bringing in several ex-Baggies players like Morgan Rogers and Lino Sousa who could have stayed and thrived at The Hawthorns, but went elsewhere and now have ended up at Villa Park.
Now, with Corberan’s comments, the academy can look forward to a bright future.
