West Brom: Pat Frost issues bold Leicester and Leeds United claims after 2-0 win over Cardiff
West Brom would be battling Leicester City for the Championship title if it weren’t for major injury problems, according to Pat Frost.
The former Baggies kitman reacted via Twitter late on 13 February after a 2-0 win over Cardiff City opened up a four point gap back to sixth place, but with 26 points between the club and the table-topping Foxes.
Carlos Corberan has had to contend with serious fitness blows throughout the season, with with Daryl Dike’s second Achilles tear inside a year at Ipswich last weekend just the latest.
Frost wrote: “I know it’s so late and don’t @ me but if CC had a fully fit squad for the whole of the season we are pushing Leicester all the way.
“I think we just about finish above Leeds with a full squad, we have been so unlucky with injuries it’s untrue.”
Pat Frost backs West Brom to threaten Leicester without ‘untrue’ injuries
It’s a pretty big claim considering the form that Enzo Maresca’s side have been in all season, but in light of where Corberan has kept the Albion despite everything it is hard to dismiss it.
The power of parachute payments has become clear in the table after Ipswich’s incredible start stuttered, with Leicester, Leeds and Southampton now occupying the top three spots after their relegation from the Premier League last year.
That West Brom’s own payments are over and the additions to the squad have been loans and free transfers thanks to the financial picture off the pitch makes a prime positions within the play-off places at this stage of the campaign impressive enough.
For Dike to be the last signing that the club spent serious money on only for him to be restricted to 32 appearances in two years thanks to the scale of his injury issues is symptomatic of the overall situation.
Josh Maja and Matt Phillips were both ruled out for five months earlier this season, while other key men such as Jed Wallace, John Swift and Kyle Bartley have also had to miss time.
With more players expected to leave among a slew of expiring contracts the chance to get promoted is likely to only get tougher next season, but it is a major achievement that Corberan has West Brom well in the running to do so this term.
