West Brom: John Percy updates on Carlos Corberan future after Shilen Patel takeover news

Carlos Corberan is “absolutely safe” as West Brom boss following the news that Shilen Patel has agreed a takeover of the club, according to John Percy.

The Baggies announced in an official statement on Thursday (club website, 15 February) that Miami-based businessman Patel and his father have agreed to purchase an 87.8% shareholding in West Bromwich Albion Group Limited, the parent company of the Baggies.

It added in an official that the EFL has approved the takeover and that completion and exchange is expected to happen next week.

There had been suggestions that the ownership might look to make a change in the dugout, with Torino boss Ivan Juric said to be a contender for the post (Tuttosport, 12 February) but Telegraph journalist Percy has poured cold water on those suggestions.

Posting on his official Twitter account, he wrote: “West Brom confirm that Shilen Patel is expected to complete his takeover next week. Genuinely brilliant news for a proper football club. Carlos Corberan absolutely safe (despite reports from abroad) and should now get the backing he deserves for doing such an outstanding job.”

Carlos Corberan is safe at West Brom

The good news just keeps on flowing at West Brom right now, doesn’t it?

First, we learn that the end of the Guochuan Lai era is nigh. Second we learn that Patel’s deal – via Bilkul Football WBA, LLC, a company owned by him and his father – for West Brom should complete by next week. Then we learn that Corberan is likely to be staying at The Hawthorns!

The last one in particular is worthy of celebration. A new takeover was absolutely necessary, of course, but changing the popular Spaniard at this juncture would have felt like starting the new regime off on the wrong foot.

Corberan has done an excellent job in extremely testing circumstances this season and Baggies supporters are excited to see what he can do without the backdrop of financial fears.

There is still a great chance that West Brom get promoted this season and with some proper backing in the boardroom there is no telling what Corberan could achieve. The fact that it looks like he is staying put is absolutely fantastic news for West Brom and the club’s supporters.
