Jed Wallace anonymous 3/10, Alex Mowatt 7/10 – West Brom player ratings v Southampton

It was a disappointing result for West Brom as they slipped to a defeat against Southampton on Friday (16 February).

Ryan Fraser handed the Saints the lead on just 14 minutes, with David Brooks finding a second on 72 minutes to secure his side a 2-0 victory at The Hawthorns.

Carlos Corberan, who was sent off just minutes into the game after touching the ball before it went out of play, would have wanted more from his side as they lacked creativity in front of goal against their promotion rivals.

Here is how West Brom News rated each player out of 10 for their performance.

Alex Palmer – 5

It was a shaky start to the game for Palmer as he played a loose ball out from the back that was intercepted by a Southampton attacker before the keeper made a save to make up for his mistake. He couldn’t have done much about either goal.

Darnell Furlong – 4

The defender was caught out of position for the opener as Fraser was allowed to steal in at the back post and slot the ball home with ease. He wasn’t tight enough again in the build-up to the second goal, while he also missed a big chance to draw his side level [SofaScore].

Cedric Kipre – 4

It wasn’t the best performance from Kipre as he didn’t look entirely convincing alongside Pieters in the heart of the defence. The centre-back won just two of his five duels throughout the evening, while he made no tackles and was dribbled past once.

Erik Pieters – 3

Pieters struggled to really adapt to the pace of the game throughout the entire contest in central defence. The Dutchman won just two of his seven duels, while he made two fouls as he failed to deal with the threats posed by the Saints forwards. He should have done better with Brooks’ goal as he allowed the winger too much space to get a shot away.

Conor Townsend – 5

Another Albion defender that had a largely forgetful night. While the left-back didn’t do too much wrong, he didn’t provide much of an attacking threat as he failed to find a teammate with any of his three crosses into the box.

Okay Yokuslu (Off for Chalobah ’81) – 6

Yokuslu had some decent moments in the game and was largely excellent on the ball as he recorded a 93 per cent pass accuracy and made one key pass before being subbed off. The Turkish midfielder was booked in the second half, however, after a poor touch on the halfway line led to him picking up a yellow card.

Alex Mowatt was by far the best West Brom player against Southampton

Alex Mowatt – 7

The midfielder was by far the best player for the Baggies throughout the night. Mowatt tried to make things happen for his side, recording a 96 per cent pass accuracy and winning two out of his three duels. He also blocked two shots, made one tackle and two key passes.

Mikey Johnston (Off for Reach ’65) – 5

The efforts of Johnston can’t really be faulted, but he lacked quality in the final third as he recorded just a 70 per cent pass accuracy as he gave away the ball 10 times.

John Swift (Off for Marshall ’64) – 5

Swift wasn’t quite his creative self against Southampton as he touched the ball just 24 times before being subbed off. He was reasonably tidy in possession, but he didn’t hit the target with either of his shots and lost out in all three of his duels.

Jed Wallace (Off for Diangana ’65) – 3

The Albion captain was extremely wasteful in possession as he recorded just a 69 per cent pass accuracy and made a few poor attempts at getting crosses into the box, having touched the ball just 20 times. He was unsuccessful in his one attempted dribble and failed to hit the target with his only shot of the game.

Brandon Thomas-Asante (Off for Fellows ’45) – 3

The forward had a miserable first half before being subbed off at half-time. Thomas-Asante failed to bring his fellow attackers into game after having just 13 touches and getting no shots away at goal.

Subs

Tom Fellows (On for Thomas-Asante ’45) – 5

Fellows would have wanted to have more of an impact off the bench, having also had just 13 touches. He failed to make a successful cross and didn’t get any shots away.

Adam Reach (On for Johnston ’65) – 5

Reach provided a bit of energy off the bench, but perhaps lacked the quality to help his side get back in the game.

Grady Diangana (On for Wallace ’65) – 5

The winger had just 11 touches, but he made one key pass and create a big chance for his side.

Callum Marshall (On for Swift ’64) – 4

Marshall was pretty poor during his time on the pitch, recording just a 40 per cent pass accuracy and failing to hit the target with his one shot at goal.

Nathaniel Chalobah (On for Yokuslu ’81) – N/A
