West Brom takeover: Ex-Hawthorns star wowed by ‘unbelievable’ news after what happened

Nigel Quashie is thrilled to read that West Brom will be owned by Flordia-based businessman Shilen Patel next week.

In an official announcement on their website on Thursday night (15 February), the Albion announced that Bilkul Football WBA, LLC has reached an agreement to buy an 87.8 per cent shareholding in WBA Group Limited, the parent company of the club.

The EFL have approved the takeover, which will be formally completed next week.

Ex-Baggies midfielder Quashie took to X to react to the update, simply saying: “Unbelievable news!”

West Brom finally due new owners as takeover saga ends

Guochuan Lai is finally on his way out of West Brom for good.

From buying the club for over £200million in 2016 to selling it in 2024 for an absolute pittance.

Patel is not only buying West Brom from the Chinese but he’s also clearing the club’s worrying £40million debt with the deal reportedly worth around £60million in total [Express & Star].

It means Lai is essentially getting less than 10 per cent back on what he bought the Baggies for – there’s no doubt that he’s an unpopular man amongst his paymasters in Shanghai.

Lai’s days are over and it’s a new beginning at The Hawthorns. It feels like a dark cloud that’s lingered over The Hawthorns for years has finally started to disappear.

West Brom fans are understandably thrilled by the news but there’s also a bit of apprehension as well in some quarters, which is totally understandable given how most of us were excited when Lai first touched down in the Black Country eight years ago.

Let’s see how it goes but the fact Patel’s cleared Albion’s debt suggests he means business.

In other West Brom news, John Percy has said if Carlos Corberan’s job is safe amid the takeover news.
