West Brom: talkSPORT pundit slams ‘ridiculous’ Carlos Corberan moment v Southampton

Carlos Corberan being sent off in West Brom v Southampton was slammed as a “ridiculous” decision by talkSPORT pundit Dean Ashton.

The Baggies boss was sent off after just six minutes of the clash at The Hawthorns by referee Sam Allison after it was deemed he touched the ball on the sidelines before it had gone out of play.

It was not the sort of impression Corberan will have wanted to make in front of Shilen Patel, who it was confirmed on Thursday (15 February) has agreed to purchase an 87.8 per cent stake in the club.

Former West Ham striker Ashton, speaking on talkSPORT 2, felt it was a daft decision.

“It’s ridiculous, it does seem a little harsh to be honest. (But) if it’s in the rules…”

Carlos Corberan shown bizarre red card in West Brom v Southampton

There was a real feelgood factor at The Hawthorns prior to kick-off with Patel in attendance for the first time since the news of his takeover being confirmed was made public this week.

It was an utterly bizarre moment that had the home fans up in arms, though, when Corberan was sent to the stands for what appears a mere technicality in the rule book – common sense probably could have prevailed.

First of all, some might argue the ball had already gone out of play, but it definitely would have had Corberan not touched the ball anyway, so maybe a quiet word in the ear and a warning to curb the enthusiasm would have sufficed.

As it is, Corberan saw red on an important evening at West Brom and it is a bit of a shame that one of the first impressions he got to make in front of Patel was being shown red card, especially in such weird circumstances.
