West Midlands Mayor in ‘relentless’ admission amid West Brom takeover news

Andy Street has reacted to the news that Shilen Patel has now agreed a deal to complete a takeover at West Brom.

The Mayor of the West Midlands tweeted on Friday (16 February) that it’s “great to see” that the American businessman has reached an agreement to acquire Guochuan Lai’s 87.8 per cent majority shareholding as he praised the fan-led protest group Action for Albion for their “relentless” efforts in trying to secure new ownership.

He added that the attention can now “turn back to the pitch” and a “run at promotion” as Albion look to return to the Premier League this season.

West Brom takeover has been achieved by several parties

The hugely positive news that has emerged over the past 24 hours is something some West Brom fans perhaps questioned would ever happen given the tough times they have faced in recent years.

But they can now hopefully look forward to better times under Patel’s ownership, with the businessman set to become the club’s new chairman.

This wouldn’t have been achieved without the efforts of several stakeholders, but Action for Albion certainly deserves plenty of praise for its work behind the scenes and the pressure it’s put on Lai to sell up.

Carlos Corberan will no doubt feel that the news is a huge weight off his back, too, as it can’t have been an easy ride for him over the past 18 months or so.

But the Baggies manager has done an excellent job of putting his side in with a chance of achieving promotion and he will be hoping this development can now spur them on to achieve success this season.
