West Brom: Tony Brown baffled by what happened to Andi Weimann in loss v Southampton

Tony Brown was “very surprised” that Andreas Weimann was left on the bench for the entire game in the West Brom defeat against Southampton on Friday (16 February).

Speaking after the 2-0 loss on BBC Radio WM on Friday (13:30), the pundit said the Austrian international would have been “full of confidence” after scoring in the 2-0 victory over Cardiff City on 13 February.

He added that the 32-year-old has a bit of “strength and physicality” about him as he was puzzled about why the forward wasn’t brought on to “have a go” as the other attacking players failed to offer much at The Hawthorns.

“I’m very surprised that Weimann didn’t come on because he scored in his last game,” said Brown. “When you’ve scored a goal, you’re full of confidence and you want to get on again, you want to score more. He has got a bit of strength and physicality about him.

“What we’ve got other than him up front has not really done anything this evening. Thomas-Asante wasn’t effective, so I’m surprised he didn’t bring Weimann on just to have a go.”

Andreas Weimann should have come on for West Brom

It is absolutely baffling that Weimann was left on the bench after he’s scored in two out of his last three matches since making the loan switch to West Brom from Bristol City.

The other attacking players were pretty poor throughout the evening and it was crying out for someone to come on and make something happen.

The Austrian has earned that right with his recent performances and you would think he would at least be one of the five substitutes that the Albion coaching staff decided to make.

Carlos Corberan has been praised for the job he’s done at West Brom

The Baggies simply weren’t able to find a cutting edge throughout the game, with Southampton earning what was a deserved victory in their hunt for automatic promotion.

While Carlos Corberan shouldn’t be too downhearted by the fact his side lost to a better team on the night, he will know they must be better if they want to challenge for promotion themselves this season.
