West Brom: Tony Brown rages at what Alex Palmer did in Hawthorns loss v Southampton

Tony Brown raged live on air as Alex Palmer was caught out trying to play out from the back in the West Brom defeat against Southampton on Friday (16 February).

Speaking on BBC Radio WM on Friday (08:13pm, via BBC Sport), the pundit said he couldn’t understand the Albion keeper trying to play out from the back, with his pass intercepted by Adam Armstrong before he got a shot away at goal.

Despite the 27-year-old making a good save to make up for his mistake, Brown labelled the decision as “crazy”, with the Baggies eventually losing the game 2-0 at The Hawthorns.

Alex Palmer needs to pick right moments for West Brom

It isn’t the time to completely stop Palmer from playing out from the back because he is usually excellent on the ball, but he has to pick the right moments.

The keeper almost got caught out in the 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town on 3 February, where Brown also criticised him for his decision-making.

There are times when playing out is the best option to get your team moving forward up the pitch, but it isn’t when the opposing team are pushing high up the pitch and looking to press.

West Brom hired Carlos Corberan in October 2022 after Steve Bruce left The Hawthorns.

That decision wasn’t one that eventually proved costly for Albion, though, as Southampton proved to be far too good for them on the night and picked up a deserved victory.

Carlos Corberan will likely be disappointed by the performance of some his players as they lacked creativity and a cutting edge in the final third.
