Shilen Patel mooted to make ‘Huge Mistake’ as Carlos Corberan tipped for West Brom exit

Shilen Patel would be making a “huge mistake” if he opted to sack Carlos Corberan as manager of West Brom after completing his takeover, according to Justin Allen.

The American businessman has completed a deal worth £60m to take over Guochuan Lai’s 87.8% stake in the club, and was present for the 2-0 defeat to Southampton at The Hawthorns on Friday night.

There has been speculation that Patel could look to replace Corberan and appoint Ivan Juric as manager, but The Sun journalist took to his personal Twitter account (17 February) to claim that it’s “concerning” to read such stories after the job he has done.

“It’s quite concerning to have read reports that he [Patel] is lining up Ivan Juric to take over at some point. That would be a huge mistake. Corberan has done a fantastic job at West Brom.

“If I was the new West Brom owner I would stick with him and keep faith, because he is the man to build a squad at The Hawthorns in my opinion.”

Carlos Corberan must stay at West Brom

There is no world in which any West Brom fans want to see Corberan leave the club this season or any time soon, irrespective of the result on Friday night.

When you take into account the fact that Corberan took over last season with the club battling relegation and took the team to the brink of the playoffs, and this season the team are right in the mix for a top-six finish again, despite a severe lack of funds it’s hard to know what else is expected of him.

Corberan is one of the most adaptable managers that Baggies fans have seen in a long time, and with a better budget and some time there are no limits to what he could do.

Patel has immediately won fans over by buying the club from Guochuan Lai and getting him out of the club, and then clearing the club’s £40m debt too.

But if he wants a sure-fire way to come under criticism quickly, then getting rid of the manager is certainly one way to do it.
