West Brom blow chance to clinch points v Southampton after Carlos Corberan super-sub decision

West Brom had a great chance to close the gap on the clubs ahead of them in their recent meeting with Southampton.

The Hawthorns played host to the Championship clash under the lights on Friday (16 February), with the home supporters hopeful of a positive result.

But instead the Midlands club blew the chance to put pressure on those above them, with the Saints winning the match 2-0. Ryan Fraser and David Brooks grabbed the goals to leave the Albion sitting fifth in the Championship table.

Hawthorns boss Carlos Corberan certainly let himself down with a sixth-minute red card, but that wasn’t his only poor decision throughout the 90 minutes.

January signing Andreas Weimann was named on the bench against the Saints, which certainly wasn’t a bad call from the manager given how the attacker has scored both of his West Brom goals as a substitute.

The Hawthorns loanee entered the fray in such circumstances against both Birmingham City and Cardiff City, scoring on each occasion.

But Corberan overlooked the super-sub this time around, which was a strange decision given how the hosts were chasing a goal for some time having gone 1-0 down after just 14 minutes.

West Brom instead turned to Tom Fellows, Callum Marshall, Grady Diangana, Adam Reach and Nathaniel Chalobah, but none had a major say, with the Saints netting their second goal in the 73rd minute to secure all three points.

Ex-Aston Villa forward Andi Weimann scored a winner against Birmingham City on his West Brom home debut at The Hawthorns.

Given his experience and his two goals from four Baggies appearances, it was seemingly the wrong decision to leave new loan attacker Weimann on the bench for this important clash.
