West Brom: Don Goodman fears Carlos Corberan 'disaster' at The Hawthorns amid speculation

West Brom News Speaking to Don Goodman

West Brom News is delighted to have Don Goodman joining its team of Albion experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the Baggies between 1987 and 1991, scoring 60 goals in 140 league appearances to make him one of the most prolific strikers in Hawthorns history. Goodman also played for Bradford, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Now, Don has agreed to join West Brom News and we're absolutely thrilled to share his expertise on the Baggies every week.

Don Goodman says losing Carlos Corberan at the end of the season would be the "biggest disaster" for West Brom, rather than any players leaving.

Despite having to work under tight financial constraints, impressive manager Corberan has the Baggies in contention for promotion.

Albion were beaten 2-0 at home to Southampton on Friday (16 February), but they remain in a Championship play-off spot.

Should West Brom fail to earn promotion to the top flight, there may well be interest in Corberan from teams higher up the food chain, while some out-of-contract players could move on.

Speaking to West Brom News, former Albion player Goodman said: "I fear they could lose Carlos Corberan, which would be the biggest disaster of all for West Bromwich Albion.

"At the end of the day, he probably knew he wouldn't have too much money to spend and that he would have to wheel and deal, which he has done. I think he's overachieving at the moment.

"There's a lot that will have to happen between now and the end of the season to guess what state the club will be in in the summer and whether Carlos Corberan will be there. One thing's for sure, it's certainly going to be interesting."

Carlos Corberan a Premier League manager in waiting

Corberan has worked wonders in his 16 months at The Hawthorns, guiding the club from relegation danger in his first season to play-off contenders.

In his first full campaign at the helm, the Spaniard has had West Brom in a play-off spot pretty much throughout.

Unfortunately, given the tight nature of the division, Albion could cruelly miss out on the end-of-season lottery if they are unable to find some consistency again.

Should promotion not be achieved, there is every chance a Premier League club could take a punt on Corberan. It is a little surprising that he has not already been more strongly linked with some jobs.

For now, that is not a fear for Albion fans as promotion is still a realistic possibility. And with the takeover all but complete, Corberan now looks set to get the financial backing he deserves.
