John Swift may be set for West Brom axe v Plymouth Argyle amid surprise Andi Weimann update

West Brom and Carlos Corberan will be desperate to get back to winning ways against Plymouth Argyle following their disappointing defeat to Southampton last time out.

The Baggies missed a chance to boost their chances of finishing in the playoff places this term as the Saints ran out 2-0 winners at The Hawthorns, with a number of players struggling following Corberan’s early red card.

Few players were more disappointing than John Swift who started for Albion in the number 10 role just behind Brandon Thomas-Asante, as the attacking midfielder failed to have a big influence on proceedings.

The 28-year-old was substituted after only 64 minutes having only registered 23 touches of the ball and while he was fairly accurate when passing, Swift failed to carve open Southampton’s defence and lacked the cutting edge that makes him such a weapon in the Championship.

Albion’s current injury situation at The Hawthorns makes it hard for Corberan to tinker with his squad too much, but with a new update emerging around Andi Weimann’s fitness, Swift may be set to be axed by the Baggies’ boss.

Will Andi Weimann be fit for West Brom clash with Plymouth?

Reports emerged from the Express and Star’s Matt Maher on Monday (19 February) that Weimann will once again be fit and available for Albion’s trip to Home Park on Tuesday (20 February) having remained on the bench against Southampton through illness.

The Austria international’s return will open the door for Corberan to reshuffle his pack as West Brom look to get back to winning ways, especially considering his excellent form since arriving at The Hawthorns in the January transfer window.

Weimann has managed two goals and an assist for the Baggies in four appearances so far and has looked relatively at home when deployed in Swift’s usual role just behind Thomas-Asante as a number 10.

Ex-Aston Villa forward Andi Weimann scored a winner against Birmingham City on his West Brom home debut at The Hawthorns.

The 32-year-old should be fresh and ready to start from the off having had an entire week without a fixture, a luxury not available to most in Albion’s camp and therefore he will almost certainly return to West Brom’s starting XI.

While Corberan could opt to drop one of Jed Wallace or Mikey Johnston after both wide men struggled against Southampton, it feels more likely it will be Swift who faces the axe having failed to impress in the defeat to the Saints.

Swift earned plenty of praise for his electric start to the season, with David Prutton even labelling him one of the Championship’s “star men”, but his recent indifferent form could mean that he is set for the axe.
