Nathaniel Chalobah gets away with ‘dodgy’ West Brom v Plymouth penalty incident – Tony Brown

West Brom midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah got away with a “dodgy” challenge to avoid giving away a first-half penalty in the Baggies’ 3-0 win over Plymouth Argyle.

Carlos Corberan’s side got back to winning ways at Home Park on Tuesday (20 February) with an excellent 3-0 win over the Pilgrims thanks to goals from Cedric Kipre, Mikey Johnston and Tom Fellows.

However, the home side felt that they should have been awarded a spot-kick in the opening 15 minutes of the clash when Chalobah appeared to push Darko Gyabi and Brown admitted the Albion midfielder was lucky to go unpunished.

Speaking on BBC Radio West Midlands (20 February, 20:02) he said: “Well it was a push in the back and it was a dodgy one from Chalobah but he’s got away with it.

“The referee has said no, you’ve got to be careful in those situations especially when you’re chasing opponents into your own box from behind and you give them a little push.”

Can West Brom win promotion with Nathaniel Chalobah starting?

Chalobah was a slightly surprising inclusion in Corberan’s starting XI at Home Park on Tuesday, with most supporters expecting to see Alex Mowatt and Okay Yokuslu continue at the base of the Baggies’ midfield.

But the 29-year-old has impressed in his recent appearances in the West Brom midfield and has been deserving of a start. His performance at Home Park on Tuesday however showed exactly why he doesn’t start week in and week out.

For every moment of quality on the ball that saw him pick a pass between the Argyle midfield, there was a moment that had supporters’ hearts’ in their mouths, just like the incredibly “dodgy” push of Gyabi in the opening exchanges.

Chalobah’s contract is set to expire at The Hawthorns at the end of the season and it feels as though he is playing for a new deal whenever he starts for the Baggies and his performances will have to improve for Albion to offer him new terms.
