West Brom Women right to be ‘proud’ despite Brimingham County Cup defeat v Wolves
West Brom Women are right to be proud of their performance despite the eventual penalty defeat to Wolves in the Birmingham County Challenge Cup semi-final.
Albion took an early 2-0 lead after a strong start when a change in formation proved to catch out their opponents before later being pegged back to 2-2 and losing on penalties.
After their poor league form, the 2-0 lead came as a shock to many, and despite the final score, it will have provided a much-needed injection of confidence to this squad.
Pheobe Warner spoke to the official club website after the game, sharing: “It was really gutting. We had a strong start, going 2-0 up, it was an amazing feeling starting so quickly.
“We managed to hold off their pressure for a large proportion of the game. Then with it going to penalties at the end, it’s just really disappointing.
“We shocked Wolves. I don’t think anyone expected the change in shape and the confidence that came with it. I’m proud of the girls and how we adapted to the formation. How we really just took the game by the scruff of the neck was impressive.”
West Brom Women should be proud despite defeat
Warner is right, it was impressive. The change of shape from Albion allowed them to surprise their opponents who weren’t prepared for the new formation and quick start as they looked to gain an early advantage.
Eventually, quality told. Wolves are ten places above Albion in the league, and their second-half display, culminating in a late equaliser, was further evidence of why.
Siobhan Hodgetts-Still was left frustrated when her side fell to a sloppy defeat against Halifax but will have been inspired by their fight against Wolves, with the change in tactics proving fruitful.

If they can carry this confidence over into their next game, a first victory since their excellent result against Derby could be on the cards. Up next, Albion face a trip to Huddersfield Town who sit six points behind them in the league, knowing a win could push them up to eighth.
