West Brom: Supercomputer predicts chances of automatic promotion after Championship developments
An Opta Supercomputer has calculated the chances of West Brom securing automatic promotion from the Championship to the Premier League this season.
The Baggies currently sit in fifth place in the table with 55 points, 12 points behind fourth-placed Southampton and four points clear of seventh-placed Coventry City with 13 games remaining.
The fans are still hopeful of securing a place in the top flight for next season but according to The Athletic (22 February), they have just a 0.1 percent chance of getting it automatically meaning they’ll have to navigate the playoffs with Carlos Corberan’s side projected to finish on 76 points.
West Brom ready for a playoff push
Considering how the season has gone in terms of injuries and form for West Brom, it would be a huge achievement for the club to reach the playoffs.
Most people were expecting a big drop-off this season considering the lack of funds at the club and the ownership situation, but Corberan has navigated it expertly and the team’s form at The Hawthorns has been exceptional.
The boss has dealt with several severe injuries, a takeover happening behind the scenes, losing players against his will mid-season and major restrictions with transfers and has still delivered.
A top-two finish does seem too far away at this point to be considered realistic considering the teams currently ahead and their form over the course of the season, so 0.1 percent makes sense.
But you only need to finish between third and sixth to have a chance and in a two-legged semi-final then a big game at Wembley, there aren’t many Championship managers we’d rather have leading us than Corberan with his adaptability and coaching.
