West Brom: Carlos Corberan makes Celtic admission after what Mikey Johnston did in Championship

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan believes Mikey Johnston is experiencing a different way of football at The Hawthorns than at Celtic.

The winger is currently on loan at the Albion from the Scottish Premiership giants, having joined in the winter transfer window.

And he is already impressing at his temporary club, with Johnston scoring two goals from his five Baggies appearances.

“It’s not the same for Mikey to play at Celtic and West Bromwich Albion,” said Corberan, as quoted by Birmingham Live (22 February). “When you identify Celtic, when they are playing at home in a league game, they are very dominant and attack.

“When you put Celtic in a European competition, there’s another scenario. What is important is that Johnston had a loan in Portugal previously. He was in a team which was different to Celtic, so it’s new to him to be in a different environment to Celtic, it’s not the first time he’s had a different style. That allows us to trust more in his adaptation.”

Johnston has immediately hit the ground running at The Hawthorns, with the attacker a real hit with the Albion fans thanks to his early displays.

He netted his first Baggies goal in under a minute in the 2-0 win against Cardiff City, before doubling his tally for the club in the 3-0 win against Plymouth Argyle.

The 24-year-old is now on his second spell away from Celtic, having previously lined out for Portuguese side Vitoria S.C. on a temporary basis.

There, Johnston found the back of the net three times from 31 appearances, with the attacker certain to overcome that tally at his new club in the coming months.

He will now undoubtedly play a key role under Corberan as the Baggies continue their promotion push, which will certainly be a difficult task given the form of the clubs around them.

League leaders Leicester City and second-placed Leeds United look unstoppable, but perhaps there is hope that the likes of Southampton and Ipswich Town can be caught.
