Carlos Corberan issues West Brom update on lesser-spotted West Ham loanee Callum Marshall
Carlos Corberan claims Callum Marshall is “very, very, very talented” but admits he needs more experience at West Brom.
The young striker came in on loan from West Ham during the January transfer window, but in contrast to fellow winter signings Mikey Johnston from Celtic and Andi Weimann from Bristol City he hasn’t had a major impact yet.
The Baggies boss acknowledged as such, having given him just three short substitute appearances so far, but suggested he could still have an important role to play.
Corberan said, via Express & Star (28 February): “We know that Marshall didn’t have previous experience in the senior level. He is a very, very, very talented young striker, but he still needs experience.
“Sometimes you get experience by playing. Sometimes you get experience by fighting and working and improving as a player.
“As a player, sometimes you have to get minutes in his experience and that is the way that football works.”

The Albion were restricted to cheap loan signings in January thanks to the ongoing financial pressures around the club, and in Johnston and Weimann they appear to have struck relative gold in the circumstances.
With Shilen Patel’s takeover about to go through there will be hopes that going forward the transfer windows won’t be such difficult affairs.
If Corberan can get West Brom promoted this season then it would change the picture massively, and he is surely going to need to turn to Marshall in the short-term as he attempts to achieve that.
Josh Maja was already ruled out for five months when Daryl Dike was struck down by another heartbreaking Achilles rupture so soon after returning from his last long-term recovery.
Now with Brandon Thomas-Asante, for so long the one reliable presence at striker as the miserable Baggies injury luck struck all around him, also out for a number of weeks [Birmingham Live, 23 February], Marshall is close to the last man standing.
The 19-year-old is clearly raw with just eight senior appearances in his career, and a single goal for Linfield, but if he is as talented as Corberan indicates his time might be now.
