West Brom playoff verdict shared amid ‘unbelievable’ Hawthorns development

It would be a “marvellous achievement” if West Brom manage to finish in the playoff places this season, according to Carlton Palmer.

Speaking to Football League World on Tuesday (27 February), the pundit said the Baggies have been on an “unbelievable run” during this campaign as they are “punching way above the division” given the transfer budget Carlos Corberan has had to work with at The Hawthorns.

With Norwich City and Preston four points behind Albion outside the playoffs, he believes they will finish in the top six if they can maintain the form they’ve shown this season.

“West Brom are having a fantastic season under Carlos Corberan, they are punching way above the division and their transfer budget that has been given,” said Palmer. “Unbelievable run, after 34 games they sit in fifth place, 56 points, in a playoff place.

“Norwich now and Preston have four points to make up to catch West Brom, so if they continue in the vein that they’re doing they’re going to end up in a playoff place, which will be a marvellous achievement.”

West Brom on course for excellent season at Hawthorns

The West Brom fans would have snapped your hand off if you offered them the position they currently find themselves in at the start of this season.

There was so much uncertainty heading into the campaign after Corberan was forced to let a number of players go to balance the books.

But the Spaniard has done an incredible job of getting the absolute most out of his players and finding a system that has allowed them to remain competitive in every game and pick up some huge victories.

It would be a bit of a disappointment to not make the playoffs now after they have been in the top six for most of the season.

They have a great chance of still being in those places come May, though, as they continue to pick up results and show they have what it takes to go toe-to-toe with the best sides in the Championship.
