West Brom: Don Goodman shares Coventry City 'fear' as Carlos Corberan point raised

West Brom News Speaking to Don Goodman

West Brom News is delighted to have Don Goodman joining its team of Albion experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the Baggies between 1987 and 1991, scoring 60 goals in 140 league appearances to make him one of the most prolific strikers in Hawthorns history. Goodman also played for Bradford, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Now, Don has agreed to join West Brom News and we're absolutely thrilled to share his expertise on the Baggies every week.

Don Goodman believes Coventry City are one of the teams West Brom "should fear" ahead of their showdown at The Hawthorns.

West Brom sit in fifth place, five points better off than Midlands rivals Coventry in ninth, heading into Friday's (1 March) clash.

Goodman ultimately expects the Baggies to book a spot in the play-offs, where they could once again meet Coventry.

West Brom well positioned in Championship play-off battle

And the former West Brom striker believes Albion will have head coach Carlos Corberan to thank should they indeed finish in the top six.

"They're coming to the end of a difficult run of fixtures with the likes of Southampton, Ipswich, Hull and Coventry," Goodman told West Brom News.

"I said before the Ipswich game that if they were in the top six after Coventry, they'd stay there.

"It would be massive for them to get three points off Coventry, but if not they should at least aim to not lose to keep Coventry five points back. Coventry are one of the teams they should fear as they will also challenge all the way."

On Corberan's work at Albion, Goodman added: "He's known for being a tactical genius and having West Brom punching above their weight.

"I don't honestly think they're the fifth-best team in the Championship from a football sense and quality sense, but I do think he gets them set up well so they can compete.

"The players will run through brick walls for him. He's got an experienced squad and he's able to implement a gameplan to get points from difficult games, so you're onto a winner."

Carlos Corberan a Premier League manager in waiting

West Brom supporters are fully aware of just how special Carlos Corberan is. The fear should Albion not go up this season is that a Premier League club comes calling further down the line, with even Jurgen Klopp impressed by what he has seen.

There was also recently bizarre speculation of the new owners possibly wanting to bring in one of their own, but that is surely not going to happen.

Ideally, Corberan will indeed be a Premier League manager next season while still at The Hawthorns helm.

Albion can take a giant step towards achieving that by overcoming Coventry on home soil in this latest big test.

After navigating a very difficult February, the finishing line is now very much in sight. Should they cement that play-off spot, Albion have to fancy their chances against any side in the division thanks to Corberan.
